Beginner Level (A1, A2 Level)

A1 101 (True Beginners) – SECOND SECTION ADDED!

Bienvenue aux débutants! Welcome, beginners! This class is designed for students with no prior experience in French. Careful attention is paid to proper pronunciation, best learning techniques, and in-class participation to learn how to speak with confidence. We will cover the introductory and first unit of Édito A1: introducing oneself, talking about likes and dislikes, and asking for basic information. Greetings, initial numbers, and the alphabet are also covered, in addition to core grammar concepts such as verb conjugation and noun-adjective agreement. Have fun in French with your classmates learning the language in authentic contexts and using our practical and effective method!

On avance! This class moves students beyond the basics and onto the new material of Unit 3 in the new edition of Édito. You’ll discover new verb forms and important connecting words and, as always, our emphasis on speaking. You will also be using and reviewing what came previously (la base) in addition to taking on the new theme of “What’s there to eat?” Anchor learning in real-world scenarios that are practical and motivating! This class will cover Unit 4 while revisiting the first 3 units in the Édito A1 text series. We will review how to introduce ourselves and communicate in real-world scenarios: talking about our personal preferences, family, food shopping, dining in restaurants and places in a city. Grammar points include adjective agreement and the present tense of most common regular and irregular verbs. Correct pronunciation and various cultural topics are also included. Have fun recalling your earlier French in this engaging and immersive class!

A1 103 Concentré

This class will first review the main themes of Édito A1 Units 5 and 6 through conversation and role-play of real-life scenarios. Topics will include regular and irregular verbs in the present tense, adjective agreement, shopping, reflexive verbs, physical descriptions, and pastimes.The second half of the session will delve into Unit 7 to learn vocabulary of the lived environment and introduce the passé composé. In addition to conversation, games, and songs, videos will be used to approach language from multiple modalities.

A1 104b

This class will cover the second half of Unit 8 and most of Unit 9 in the Édito A1 text series. New vocabulary includes sports, healthy eating, and the workout gym, and a vacation lexicon covers lodging, modes of transportation and activities. Continued emphasis is placed on mastering the passé composé, certain pronouns, and making comparisons. Students will learn how to give advice, express agreement and obligation, and also reserve a hotel room. Certain cultural practices are covered in addition to important pronunciation distinctions. Emphasis is also placed on asking and answering simple questions so students can practice in authentic contexts. Join your classmates to begin wrapping up the A1 curriculum!

Regions of France

This class will cover the northern regions of France, including Brittany and Normandy! We will study what makes these regions unique, including their geography, history, cuisine, largest cities, and most famous tourist sights. This course will build on the material previously studied through the 10 units of the Édito A1 text series. New vocabulary will be introduced within the context of the different regions. If you’re planning a trip or wish to study the north of France in more depth, this course will provide you with valuable insights.

A2 101 Conversational

This class will pick up where the introduction to the A2-level text left off during our Fall Session. Students will first review using the passé composé and imperfect tenses to recount the past, then move on to Unité 3: “At Home.” Emphasis is placed on using structures in practical, real-world contexts. New grammar will include relative pronouns and making comparisons. New vocabulary and cultural considerations cover the topic of lodging in France–owning and renting, interior layouts, furnishings–and describing one’s home and neighborhood. Engaging book exercises and our emphasis on speaking helps students integrate and retain language in a fun and friendly way!

Ciné-Club: Rigolons un peu . . . !

Let’s laugh a little at the movies! This class will discuss some of the lesser-known and uplifting French comedies, from directors as novel as Tati and even Bunuel! Students first watch a film at home (all available online via Amazon or Netflix), then delve together into what makes them uniquely funny and entertaining. A provided list of movie terms and target questions helps students express their likes, dislikes, and points of view. Some short films will also be featured during class! See humor and especially irony as an unique way to learn about the many dimensions of French culture! No book required.

This class will cover Unit 4 in the Édito A2 text series and also the formation of the future tense in preparation for the Spring Session. The vocabulary covers expressions one needs to describe people’s physiques and character. Key grammar points include comparison, indefinite adjectives, and possessive pronouns. Some consideration will also be given to the trickiest of vowel sounds in French, and some cultural topics such as contemporary notions of beauty and La Fontaine’s famous fables.

This class will cover Unit 9, “Responsible Consumers,” in the Édito A2 text series. Numerous authentic documents and engaging exercises help students practice what they learn in class, and some time is also devoted to reviewing previous material conversationally. In Unit 9, terms associated with consumerism and manual forms of work are covered, as well as the conditional mood. Students will learn to express desires, give advice, and ask for or propose a service. Frequent breakout sessions also allow student pairs to practice their conversational skills.

This class covers Units 14 and 15 in the Vite et Bien 2 curriculum: the press and the media and feelings and emotions. Emphasis is placed on learning the associated lexicons, including online and broadcast media and body movements. Grammar topics include indirect discourse, using complex tenses, the expressions that prompt them, the present participle, and comparisons. Culturally we’ll explore various French news outlets and fun gestures and body language. Numerous exercises built into the textbook offer engaging independent study, and students are also given time to talk in small groups and optionally present on topics that interest them.

B1-B2 Grammar Review

Dial in correct spoken grammar with this made-to-order French class! From short assessments provided initially, students choose which specific areas they would like to concentrate on. Domains include everything from the use of articles, adjectives, and negation to more advanced but unavoidable notions such as the passive voice, indirect discourse, and the subjunctive mood. This is the first of several classes based on La grammaire progessive du français, designed to help students master those structures that can’t be avoided when speaking conversationally in French. Students need not acquire the book as exercise pages will be provided electronically.

Advanced Conversation

Designed for high-intermediate and advanced students, this interactive class is an opportunity for students to practice their reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and spoken skills through a variety of sources. Class activities include authentic materials based on current events in francophone cultures (news articles, video clips, song lyrics), as well as the personal interests of the students. No book purchase required.
