Beginner Level (A1, A2 Level)

A1 101 (True Beginners)

Bienvenue aux débutants! Welcome, beginners! This class is designed for students with no prior experience in French. Careful attention is paid to proper pronunciation, best learning techniques, and in-class participation to learn how to speak with confidence. We will cover the introductory and first two units of Édito A1: introducing oneself, talking about likes and dislikes, and learning basic exchanges. Greetings, initial numbers, and the alphabet are also covered, in addition to core grammar concepts such as basic verb conjugations and noun-adjective agreement. Have fun in French with your classmates learning the language in authentic contexts and using our practical and effective method!

French for Travel

This class will help you to survive and enjoy a few days visiting a French-speaking city, such as Montréal or Paris. At an easy pace, this course will teach you about well-known places to visit and how to engage in dialogue in very basic French, for example, how to ask your way around, how to read a menu and order in a restaurant, how to interact with shopkeepers, how to describe yourself, and perhaps even how to make friends with the locals.

On avance! This class moves students beyond the basics and onto the new material of Unit 3 in the new edition of Édito. You’ll discover new verb forms and important connecting words and, as always, our emphasis on speaking. You will also be using and reviewing what came previously (la base) in addition to taking on the new theme of “What’s there to eat?” Anchor learning in real-world scenarios that are practical and motivating! Meet back up with your classmates and continue having fun learning the key words and phrases that make survival communication possible in French!

A1 102 THIS CLASS IS NOW FULL!

This class will cover Units 4 through 5 of the Édito A1 text series. Topics include how to find your way around in a city, talking about the weather, and vocabulary for clothing and other everyday objects. Emphasis is still placed on proper learning techniques and organization, and class time is devoted to learning new concepts and practicing these with the target vocabulary. Grammar points include the imperative and the near future tenses, key infinitive constructions, and essential verbs. Cultural topics include top Parisian tourist sites, cities in the French-speaking world, and fashion trends. Rejoin your classmates and engage in the fun of learning collaboratively!

With an emphasis on conversation, pronunciation, and practical application, this course will prepare you to shop for clothing and discuss the weather and your daily activities in French! Key grammatical concepts covered include adjectives, the use of two verbs to express past and future, and reflexive verbs. Have fun learning French with your classmates through speaking exercises, games, and more!

A1 104

This course will cover the key concepts and skills taught in Units 8 and 9 of the Édito A1 textbook. The class will start with a review of Unit 7 with an introduction to the passé composé and description of the lived environment before moving on to focus on topics surrounding health and vacations. The grammatical focus of this class will be the passé composé and comparisons but prepositions and the pronoun Y will also be covered. This course will prepare you to speak about past vacations and describe your state of health. Across the units, emphasis will be placed on speaking, reviewing pronunciation, and exploring Francophone culture through videos, songs, and podcasts.

The topics covered include the school and work worlds, comparing life in the country and the city, and learning strategies for continuing in French. The book and workbook offer numerous fun sources and exercises to practice new concepts and expressions. With an emphasis on basic communication and asking/answering questions with classmates, this course gets you primed for success at tackling the A2 level.

The class will focus on Units 3 and 4 of the Édito A2 text series. Unit 3 will be reviewed for some, and Unit 4 will be new for all. We will review past structures and continue a focus on using the passé composé and the imparfait to recount stories in the past. Conversation topics and vocabulary structures include talking about houses and characteristics of people. The class will also pick a variety of high-interest topics that will be used as conversation starters. An emphasis will be placed on answering a variety of questions. Time permitting, we will consider the future tense in order to prepare students for what follows in Unit 5.

This class will cover Units 5 and 6 in the Édito A2 text series: Towards the Future and In the Kitchen. Vocabulary targets include science, machines, and communication technologies in addition to food and restaurant banter. We will practice more with the future tense, then hypotheses, and later expressions of quantity and obligation. Major emphasis is placed on speaking with greater ease, but also on correct pronunciation and important cultural distinctions. Have fun with classmates talking about the future and that favorite of French cultural pursuits: La gastronomie!

This course will cover Units 10 and most of 11 in the Édito A2 textbook: Going somewhere? and Nice careers. For our in-class and paired discussions, we’ll use new vocabulary to discuss travel, tourism, and our education and work backgrounds. Grammar structures include using the passé composé and imperfect tenses together (storytelling) and a variety of useful pronouns. Emphasis is placed on the informal discussion of the two themes, with extra listening, reading, and writing exercises to help reinforce core terms and expressions. Begin wrapping up the A2 curriculum with these useful domains and your fellow fun-loving francophiles!

Intermediate Level (B1, B2 Level)

B1 104

This conversational class will cover Units 16 through 18 in the Vite et Bien II curriculum. As we near the end of the B1 curriculum, we consider Feeling and Emotions, the Arts and Literature, and Young People. The all-in-one text includes reading, listening, and new vocabulary, with numerous engaging activities to have learners quickly conversing about the various domains. We highlight proper pronunciation and cultural differences as always and will cover grammar points useful for daily communication. This session they include: the present and past subjunctive, more complex forms of negation, le futur antérieur, and a host of practical pronouns. The ability to share short presentations and numerous chances to practice speaking with a partner are two other class highlights. Join fellow French enthusiasts to work on these important domains!

Histoires de France: Roman fleuve par Philibert Humm

Philibert Humm was awarded the Prix Interallié 2022 for this fun and profound short novel, which tracks the adventures of three young Frenchmen in their attempt to follow the Seine downriver. Filled with typical French irony, the reading is otherwise straightforward and contains charming cultural insights. Students will discuss la forme et le fond in an attempt to understand the author’s intentions. They should be able to read 30 pages per week independently before class, in preparation to ask and discuss questions about the writing style and their comprehension. Students should also be able to read expressively short passages of their choice in class. Order your Folio edition early so we can all be on the same page!

Advanced Conversation

Designed for high-intermediate and advanced students, this interactive class is an opportunity for students to practice their reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and spoken skills through a variety of sources. Class activities include authentic materials based on current events in francophone cultures (news articles, video clips, song lyrics), as well as the personal interests of the students. No book purchase required.

B2 104

This course will cover Dossier 8, Modèles Éducatifs, in the Cosmopolite 4 textbook series. This unit and the one preceding it (Summer Session), cover two important topics of discussion in contemporary society: how we choose to work and educate ourselves. We’ll take a deep look at the second, using a variety of audio and reading materials, complemented by class discussions and breakout sessions with a partner. Students are expected to give short exposés on cultural topics of their choice. These can also be reviews of an article/video/podcast, or any personal form of expression (creative, inquiring…) followed by thoughtful questions for fellow students. Purchase of the Cahier d’activités is optional, but highly recommended for anyone striving to acquire B2-level proficiency.
