AFLCR Goes to Chicago, 2013

AFLCR board chair Sylvie Butel and president Linda Pervier attended the annual convention of the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA, held in Chicago in late September 2013. Explained Linda, “We were awarded a workshop slot at which we described what is special about our Alliance–that real, local francophone heritage and geographic realities share space in our programming with Eurocentric and global French culture. We got a better sense of how the Alliance is organized (though the complexity is truly daunting). We picked up lots of programming ideas—more wine-tasting is in our future! We got collegial with our peers, and we had a great time. These photo captions each tell a little of the story.”

Palmer House Hilton, site of the convention. “Meeting spaces, etc., were adequate… but the lobby was cavernous and decorated in 19th-century over-the-topness. We loved gawking at it every time we entered,” wrote Linda.

“We had met in passing in the workshops, but didn’t get into chatting
until we met Madame at the savon français display in a shop in the hotel. Some things are universal,” wrote Linda.

“Incredibly, Josette Marsh, second from right, runs the AF Honolulu from her current home in San Francisco,” reported Linda.
“She has to make frequent trips to Hawaii, poor thing.
She is also a Federation officer. Her workshop was full of great ideas about how to make member/public events affordable.”

“Ironically, the Prix recipient, chef Patricia Wells, was stuck on an airplane and missed the festive repast.
His eminence M. Delattre was his ever charming self.”

“A gallery/lounge area in AF Chicago—just one room in a huge, beautifully and very functionally appointed Maison Française that includes a kitchen classroom, movie theater, children’s areas, and pretty much anything you can think of.”

“It was great to connect with others working in the AF trenches.
Here is AF Buffalo president Evelyne Harris with our own Sylvie Butel.
A number of colleagues wanted to talk about our Piecework project,
especially those located where francophone heritage is a socio-cultural factor.”
