A balfolk (from French bal folk, meaning “folk ball”) is an event of traditional European social dances and music. Such revivals are now enjoying notable popularity in Europe and are fast becoming a beloved phenomenon in North America, too.
You’re invited to participate in a Balfolk Dance Party at ArtsRiot on Friday, November 1.
The evening will feature traditional bals folkloriques from diverse regions of France—Auvergne, Gascogne, Bretagne. Other dances, like the mazurka, scottish, waltz, and polka, come from elsewhere in Europe.
This Balkfolk Dance Party will be guided by Mary Wesley, and with live music by Triton.
Watch a video about balfolk here.
You don’t need to bring a partner, and no prior experience is necessary. There will likely be a good mix of total beginners and experienced dancers.
When: Friday, November 1, 2024. A beginners’ workshop will start at 7:30pm, and the balfolk itself (with some brief instruction) will last from 8pm to 10pm.
Where: ArtsRiot, 400 Pine Street, Burlington, VT
Admission: The organizers suggest a $10-$20 donation to help cover the space rental, sound tech, musicians’ travel, etc.
